International Literacy Day (ILD) |
Saturday 8 September, 2012

8 September has been observed as International Literacy Day (ILD) throughout the world since 1966. Like many other countries International Literacy Day 2012 was observed in Bangladesh at national & local level with various activities. This year’s theme of ILD is "Literacy and Peace".
Literacy is a fundamental human right. Literacy transforms people into conscious and responsible citizens. Literacy is a powerful tool to eradicate poverty and a strong means for social and human development. Literacy is the primary key to develop the growth of a logical and scientific mind. And thus it helps ensure peace in society and diminishes social tensions. To observe the event of ILD 2012 CAMPE organized a National planning meeting on 02 September with partners’ organization. In this planning meeting representatives from different organizations shared their planned programs to celebrate the day across the country.
At the national level CAMPE joined the main event of ILD 2012 organized by the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. Representatives from CAMPE & its partner organizations participated the colorful rally and inaugural program held at the Osmani Memorial Hall, Dhaka. The Hon’ble State Minister Md. Motahar Hossain, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (MoPME) graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

CAMPE’s Open Appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister (published in National Dailies) demanding more and judicious allocation for the Education sector and its efficient utilization |
This Open Appeal is the outcome of a consultative process among CAMPE’s constituency and developed on the basis of our demands placed before decision makers from time to time. We have learnt that the Education sector is not getting proper priority in the proposed budget for 2012-2013. However, CAMPE has already started lobbying with the decision makers particularly Ministers and MP’s for supporting our demand for allocation of at least 20% of the total budget for education (which is currently a little more the 12 %).

Civil Society leaders condemn police attack on agitating teachers of Non- government primary school teachers |

Wednesday 16 May, 2012
Failing to get any assurance from the government regarding regularization of their jobs, thousands of primary school teachers started collecting in Dhaka city to hand in a Memorandum to the Prime Minister on Wednesday May 16 to demand what had been promised earlier by the ruling party in their election manifesto. Unfortunately these innocent civilians out on the streets under the scorching sun were hardly aware of what was to befall upon them. The law enforcing agencies took them by surprise and doused them with hot water adding to their misery. The unprecedented humiliation and brutality was uncalled for because these protesting teachers were unarmed civilians demanding their rights.
The death of a head teacher and many injured seeks to raise questions on the concept and practice of democracy and the role of the law enforcing agencies. Against such a background CAMPE facilitated a signature campaign from leaders of the civil society to condemn this act and demand:
Immediate punishment of those responsible in carrying out such an inhuman act |
Take measures to provide orientation to law enforcers on human rights issues |
Form a Permanent Pay Commission in compliance with the recommendations made in the National Education Policy 2010 and addresses the issues related to the status and pay scale of teachers of non government primary schools. |
The Civil Society leaders also appealed to the teachers to refrain from any acts that would disrupt the regular learning process of the students. |

"We want to read books with real stories of liberation war" said Mohammad Tarek while his class fellows were so impatient to deliver their own judgment on books they want as text in their classes. Tarek is a student of Bharatkhali Boys High School situated in Shaghata, Gaibandha district. Farzana Mitu, a student of class 8 said, "I would love read stories of the dark and remotest corner of the world which I see in Discovery channel". "We want to read interesting stories" echoed the whole class. Students of Mahilara A. N. High School, Gouranadi, Barishal are interested to read traditions of English classics. But on the other side of the coin, a number of students of Rangdia High Schoo, Bagerhat showed the poor quality of their text books- misplaced pages, bad unreadable printing, text area of the book sliced away while binding, and so forth. Students asked for books which will keep them away from 'Guide Books'. These students were from the 600 students participated in the, "Book We Want to Read" campaign launched by CAMPE at Gaibandha, Barishal, Bagerhat and Cox's Bazar districts from 12 to 24 March 2012. Chairman of National Curriculum and Text Book Board Professor Md. Mostafa Kamaluddin and Abul Momen, renowned columnist & journalist joined the campaign at Kutupalong high School, Ukhia, Cox's Bazar.
